Amigas Latinas Offers Scholarships

Founded in 1995, Amigas Latinas is a 501(C)(3) organization whose mission is to empower Latina lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning women by providing a safe environment, personal growth, support, education, and advocacy to impact family, friends and the larger communities we live in. Amigas Latinas ? Vision is to celebrate who you are with pride and acceptance, without boundaries or limitations, fearlessly and unapologetically.

Amigas Latinas seeks young Latina LGBTQQ student activists for several scholarships ranging $500 -$1,000. Qualifications include:

  • Illinois residency, including Illinois resident living out of state for college
  • Entering or enrolled in college
  • Demonstrated advocacy work for the LGBTQQ community Amigas Latinas is willing to consider providing funds to support a Gay/Straight Alliance at a highly Latino populated high school in Illinois. A sponsor may apply on behalf of the group.

To apply, send:

  • Cover Letter with name, address, phone number and email address
  • Essay addressing the reasons why Amigas Latinas should select you for the Amigas Latinas' scholarship. The essay should be 500 words or less.
  • Proof of college acceptance or enrollment.

Deadline for applications is post marked or emailed by April 21, 2010. Scholarship awardees will be notified by April 26, 2010 and checks will be presented at the Amigas Latinas' Gala ¡Siempre Latina! on May 1st at Center on Halsted.

A scholarship writing workshop will be offered at the Amiguitas meeting on April 9th, 6:30–8:30 at Center on Halsted.
